Ep. 03-34: The Devil Rides Out (1968)

The Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex Van Ryn (Leon Greene) arrive at a party thrown by de Richleau’s protégé, Simon (Patrick Mower), only to discover that the party is actually the gathering of a Satanic cult, led by the high priest Mocata (Charles Gray), who plans to initiate the beautiful young Tanith (Nike Arrighi) that night. Richleau and Van Ryn must defeat the devil-worshiping Mocata and save young Tanith and Simon from a terrible fate.

Episode 34 – The Devil Rides Out

Welcome back to another diabolical devil movie! This one was quite the guilty pleasure as it is a Hammer film, with a decent pedigree, that neither of us had ever seen. Join us as we talk about the mechanics of Matheson’s script, Fisher’s confidence behind the camera, and a cast featuring two Bond villains! Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys travels to the English countryside, where the folks at the neighboring estate might be up to more than just a pleasant picnic!

Ep. 03-31: The Deadly Mantis (1957)

An attack on an arctic weather station and a USAF transport plane has the Air Force puzzled. Their scientists make little headway but Col. Joe Parkman enlists the aid of a paleontologist, Dr. Ned Jackson (William Hopper), who may have the answer: the culprit is a giant praying mantis. The creature is traveling south, and it’s a race against time to capture or kill it.

Episode 31

Welcome to the first of our coverage of three creature features in a row! The 1950s and the atomic age introduced a plethora of these big-bug type films, and The Deadly Mantis (1957) is a prime example. Join us as we discuss our history with this film and how it holds up in the modern age. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys tracks a giant monster from the Arctic to DC, and finally, New York… bearing witness to the path of destruction it leaves.

Ep. 03-24: Nosferatu (1922 & 1979)

The mysterious Count Orlok (Dracula) summons Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The odd Count seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Nina), in Bremen. When Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile, Orlok’s servant, Knock (Renfield), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

Episode 03-24 Nosferatu

Nosferatu (1922) is an immensely influential silent horror film, much more so than its lackluster remake, Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979). Join us as we discuss the copyright controversy between the original and the Bram Stoker estate, and the similarities and differences of both German films—the former containing iconic imagery that still resonates and influences today, and the latter which further proves that remakes are most often unnecessary… even with silent films! Listen as Johnny Has the Keys journeys to the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania in search of the very first vampire film.

Episode 03-22 Dr. Sleep

Welcome to our third Stephen King film and a direct sequel to last year’s coverage of The Shining (1980). Doctor Sleep is a beautifully shot horror film that lives up to all of its source material—namely the King novel, and the Kubrick movie. Join us as we discuss the controversial development of this project with director Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, … Bly Manor), Stephen King, and Stanley Kubrick’s estate. Listen as Johnny Has the Keys returns to the evil spirits that dwell in the Overlook Hotel and discover how they serve a purpose in the adult Dan Torrence’s quest to save a child.
