Ep. 05-22: The Mummy (1932 & 1959)

The Mummy (1932) – A team of British archaeologists led by Sir Joseph Wemple (Arthur Byron) discover the mummified remains of the ancient Egyptian prince Imhotep (Boris Karloff), along with the legendary scroll of Thoth. When one archaeologist recites the scroll aloud, Imhotep returns to life but escapes. Several years later, Imhotep has taken on the guise of a wealthy man, as he searches Egypt for his lost love, who he believes has been reincarnated as the lovely Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann).

The Mummy (1959) – In the 1890s a team of British archaeologists discover the untouched tomb of Princess Ananka but accidentally bring the mummified body of her High Priest back to life. Three years later, back in England, a follower of the same Egyptian religion unleashes the mummy to exact grisly revenge on the despoilers of the sacred past.

Ep. 04-25: Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

Prehistoric skeletons are discovered during an expansion of the London Underground. Paleontologist Matthew Roney (James Donald), believes them to be remnants of ancient man, but the strange metal object found with them is a mystery. Professor Bernard Quatermass (Andrew Keir) thinks it is evidence that the creatures came from space. More digging reveals the corpses of actual Martians and a strange energy field that sends London into a panic.

Quatermass and the Pit

As much fun as Universal films in America, Hammer films of England often bear wonderful chestnuts and refreshing dips into the pool of nostalgia. And though Hammer is mostly known for its forages into Universal monster territory, Quatermass and the Pit (1967) is one of their rare science fiction films. Join us as we discuss the talented team of writer Nigel Kneale, and director Roy Ward Baker and their spin on a deeply intellectual H. G. Wells-type story. Listen as Johnny has the Keys go down into the London underground where historical evidence of Earth, and perhaps Mars, lies not so still.

Richleau and Van Ryn must defeat the devil-worshiping Mocata and save young Tanith and Simon from a terrible fate.

Episode 34 – The Devil Rides Out

Welcome back to another diabolical devil movie! This one was quite the guilty pleasure as it is a Hammer film, with a decent pedigree, that neither of us had ever seen. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys travels to the English countryside, where the folks at the neighboring estate might be up to more than just a pleasant picnic!
