Ep. 03-19: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

Professor Aronnax (Paul Lukas) and his assistant, Conseil (Peter Lorre), are stranded in San Francisco by reports of a giant sea monster attacking ships in the Pacific Ocean. Ep. 03-19: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Welcome to the coverage of our first Disney film! And what a film it is… the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a milestone in special effects and movie production, with an A-list cast and the power of a major studio behind a unique science fiction project. Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of this epic sci-fi adventure. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys dives deep into the water, where monster squids lurk and where a mad Captain haunts the sea in a metal beast called the Nautilus.

***Note: We’ve been having some Zoom connection problems and, occasionally, briefly, you may hear a glitch or our audio (Tim’s usually) does not sync with the video. Never fear, we catch most of the audio and (with video) the error seems to correct itself shortly. We are working on solutions to this problem.***

Ep. 02-24: Fantastic Voyage (1966)

To save a brilliant scientist, Jan Benes, a diverse team is shrunk in a nuclear submarine and injected into Benes’ body in hopes of removing a blood clot in his brain. The crew has a finite period of time to fix the clot and get out before the miniaturization wears off.

From the minds of classic sci-fi director, Richard Fleisher (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1954), and classic sci-fi writer, Jerome Bixby (The Twilight Zone, Star Trek), comes this iconic science-fiction thriller, seminal in influence to subgenre masters like Robin Cook and Michael Chrichton. Join us as we discuss its fantastic cast, script, and (radical-at-the-time) Academy Award-winning special effects. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys shrinks small enough to invade the mysteries of human anatomy and battle to preserve life from what threats lurk there.
