Ep. 05-36: Phantasm (1979)

 

PHANTASM (1979)—The residents of a small town are dying under strange circumstances, leading young Mike (Michael Baldwin) to investigate. After discovering that the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), the town’s mortician, is killing and reanimating the dead as misshapen zombies, Mike seeks help from his older brother, Jody (Bill Thornbury), and local ice cream man Reggie (Reggie Bannister). Working together, they try to lure out and kill the Tall Man, all the while avoiding his minions and a deadly silver sphere.

Sex slayings by gender-fluid villains, giant flying skull-drilling pinballs, Jawa-esque zombie slaves from another world. That’s right. We’re talking Phantasm (1979). Join us as we discuss this genuinely unique entry into the horror canon, including its memorable franchise villain (the Tall Man), the quirky script, impressive effects, terrible acting, and everything else that makes this film a bona fide cult classic. Listen as Johnny Has the Keys investigates a peculiar mortuary/mausoleum, where the halls are stalked by killer balls, robed dwarfs, and a tall man guarding the gateway to another dimension!

Ep. 05-35: Total Recall (1990)

 

TOTAL RECALL (1990)—Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a bored construction worker in the year 2084, dreams of visiting colonized Mars. He uses “Rekall,” a company that plants false memories into people’s brains, in order to experience the thrill of Mars without having to travel there. But something goes wrong, and Quaid discovers that his entire life is actually a false memory and that the people who implanted it in him now want him dead.

Welcome to our third outing with Philip K. Dick (Minority Report; Blade Runner) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator; T2: Judgement Day) and our second with the director, Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers; Robocop). Total Recall (1990) was extremely popular and innovative at the time but has not aged well. Join us as we discuss the pros (Bottin’s FX; the supporting cast) and cons (Schwarzenegger) that may separate it from the average genre fair, though no longer lift it. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys journeys to Mars… or did we? Perhaps this episode is merely a memory implant and we never really recorded it at all!

Ep. 05-34: Paranormal Activity (2007) & REC (2007)

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2007)—After moving into a suburban home, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence. Hoping to capture evidence of it on film, they set up video cameras in the house but are not prepared for the terrifying events that follow.

REC (2007)—Late-night television reporter Ángela Vidal is covering a story on the local firehouse. Through the lens of her cameraman, Pablo, they follow a team of firefighters who get a call from an apartment building nearby about a trapped woman. When they arrive, they find a woman who is obviously distressed. What follows is a night that none of them will ever forget.

Welcome to our last double-feature of the season, a double dose of classic found footage films. Neither of these films is perfect, but we feel the lesser popular one far exceeds its counterpart. Join us, as we discuss the pros and cons of both films, including the budget, screenplay (or lack thereof), pacing, cast, and scares! Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys plays voyeur to both a haunted house AND a zombie-infected apartment building.

Ep. 05-33: Rollerball (1975)

It is the year 2018, and we live in a dystopia where corporations have replaced countries. A violent futuristic game known as Rollerball is a popular recreational sport, with teams representing various areas around the world. One player, Jonathan E., fights for his personal freedom and threatens corporate control.
We return to the land of dystopia with acclaimed director Norman Jewison’s take on corporate greed and violence in contact sports. Rollerball (1975) addresses many lofty concepts and, even when not successful, it sure is fun to watch. Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of the film, including its cast, director, and screenplay. Listen as Johnny Has the Keys goes back to the future, 2018, an all too familiar world where individuals are insignificant in the corporate scheme of things.
