Seven (1995) is the story of two homicide detectives tracking down a sadistic serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who chooses his victims according to the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt is Detective David Mills, a hopeful but naive rookie who finds himself partnered with veteran Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman). Together, they trace the killer’s every step, witnessing the aftermath of his horrific crimes one by one, all the while moving closer to a gruesome fate neither of them could have predicted.

A classic anthology from two horrors masters, George A. Romero and Stephen King, this film is made up of five stories, held together with 50’s style comic imagery. A murdered man returns from the grave demanding his Father’s Day cake, a meteor’ discharge causes anything and anyone to grow into otherworldly plants, a vengeful husband buries his wife and her lover to await death at high tide, a professor uses his nagging wife as a tasty snack for a strange crated monster, and finally, an evil millionaire and germaphobe becomes prey to an army of cockroaches.

A writer, Ben Mears (David Soul), returns to his small hometown intending to write a book about the ominous old Marston House which has a reputation for being haunted and, he feels, a history of being inherently evil. Soon, Ben suspects the new inhabitants of the house have something to do with the disappearance of a kid and a mysterious plague spreading throughout the town.

Salem’s Lot (1979) was the second adaption of King’s work—also his second book—and is often remembered fondly for nostalgia and iconic imagery sakes. The film is far from perfect, plagued with the limitations (at the time) of the television format, terrible music, and pacing, and the manipulation of a major character. Join us as we discuss why this film is regarded highly despite these issues, as well as director, Tobe Hooper, and the inspired casting of James Mason.
