Ep. 05-34: Paranormal Activity (2007) & REC (2007)

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2007)—After moving into a suburban home, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence. Hoping to capture evidence of it on film, they set up video cameras in the house but are not prepared for the terrifying events that follow.

REC (2007)—Late-night television reporter Ángela Vidal is covering a story on the local firehouse. Through the lens of her cameraman, Pablo, they follow a team of firefighters who get a call from an apartment building nearby about a trapped woman. When they arrive, they find a woman who is obviously distressed. What follows is a night that none of them will ever forget.

Welcome to our last double-feature of the season, a double dose of classic found footage films. Neither of these films is perfect, but we feel the lesser popular one far exceeds its counterpart. Join us, as we discuss the pros and cons of both films, including the budget, screenplay (or lack thereof), pacing, cast, and scares! After losing his father, 10-year-old Carlos arrives at the Santa Lucia School, which shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians, and is taken in by the steely headmistress, Carmen, and the kindly professor, Casares. The Devil’s Backbone (2001), though relatively unknown to US audiences, is an exciting early glimpse into the mind of the visual storytelling auteur. Things look brighter when Jesse finds a huge old house in rural Texas, selling at a cheap price because of its mysterious past. They move in and Jesse converts the barn into a studio. But soon, his work takes on a new, darker flavor – and things get even more ominous when the hulking, unbalanced son of the former owners appears on the doorstep. Jesse’s family won’t be safe until they quiet the Devil himself.

The devil made me do it is not only the perfect idiomatic phrase for director Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy (2015) but is also quite literally the plot. Join us as we discuss the pros, cons, and keys of this striking film, including its incredibly talented director and cast. Listen as Johnny Has the Keys gets a great deal on a house, haunted not simply by its past and specters of the night, but by the devil himself!
