Ep. 07-03: Day of the Dead (1985)

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985), directed by George A. Romero, is the third installment in his iconic zombie trilogy. Set in an underground bunker after a zombie apocalypse, the film follows a group of scientists and military personnel struggling to survive. Tensions rise as they clash over how to handle the zombie threat, with one scientist attempting to domesticate the undead. The film offers a bleak exploration of human nature amid the horror of a decaying world.

Prepare to descend into apocalyptic depths with our latest episode as we explore George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985). Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of this chilling installment in Romero’s zombie trilogy, including the intense screenplay, claustrophobic setting, and the powerful performances by (most of) the cast. Ep. 06-02: Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Ana is unpleasantly surprised when her husband is brutally attacked by her zombified neighbor. Ana flees and meets a police officer named Kenneth, along with more survivors who decide that their best chances of survival would be found in the deserted Crossroads Shopping Mall. When other trapped survivors need help and supplies begin running low, the group decides they cannot stay put forever at the Shopping Mall and devise a plan to escape.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) has big shoes to fill, improving upon the original Dawn of the Dead (1978), a major classic in the horror oeuvre. Unfortunately, cameos from the original cast and adding more characters fighting fast zombies is not enough. Join us as we discuss why this movie is flawed, including its director Zack Snyder. Listen, as Johnny Has the Keys runs very fast to a shopping mall sanctuary, fighting an impossibly large and undefeatable mass of the undead.

Ep. 04-03: Return of the Living Dead (1985)

When foreman, Frank (James Karen), shows new employee, Freddy (Thom Mathews), a secret military experiment in their supply warehouse, the two accidentally release a gas that reanimates corpses into brain-eating zombies. As the pandemic spreads to a neighboring cemetery, the creatures begin to satisfy their hunger in creative and intelligent ways. Frank and Freddy fight to survive the onslaught with the help of their boss (Clu Gulager) a mysterious mortician (Don Calfa), and Freddy’s punk rock friends.

Return of the Living Dead (1985) is one of those rare movies that probably shouldn’t work but it does in every way. It’s an unofficial sequel to Night of the Living Dead (1968) from John Russo, George Romero’s former collaborator. It’s comedic, has a punk rock soundtrack, and it changes the rules set up in the original 60s classic. However, with a talented cast, clever script, and gruesome effects, this production delivers the goods, giving us a film that has not only spawned sequels but is rightly heralded as an 80s classic. Join us as we discuss the history of this film and its somewhat unusual evolution. Listen as Johnny Has the Keys barricades the doors and windows, defending ourselves from zombies that not only talk but whose sole purpose is to EAT OUR BRAINS!
